US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, hospitalized on Sunday for urgent bladder symptoms

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who was hospitalized on Sunday for urgent bladder symptoms, had testing and subsequent non-surgical operations on Monday.

Lloyd Austin, the US Defense Secretary, is back in the hospital for the second time this year.

According to a statement from Walter Reed National Medical Center, he is suffering from an emergency bladder condition.

Austin, 70, was hospitalized on Sunday after exhibiting indications of a severe bladder condition. Following a battery of testing, the decision was reached to have non-surgical treatments conducted on Monday under general anesthesia. The nature of the precise bladder ailment has not been completely addressed, leaving many issues open.

The hospital remains optimistic about Austin’s recuperation and expects a positive outcome. While the length of his hospital stay is unknown, a lengthy stay is unlikely, and the Defense Secretary is expected to resume routine activities as soon as Tuesday.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks has taken over Austin’s formal duties while his absence, a transition that happened on Sunday. This includes delaying a scheduled travel to Brussels for a NATO defense ministers conference and maybe participating in a virtual Ukraine defense meeting, depending on his health.

The health setback comes after Austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December, which was discovered during normal surveillance blood tests. On December 22, he underwent a prostatectomy, which is the partial or total removal of the prostate and surrounding lymph nodes.

The subsequent hospitalization begs the issue of whether this is a new ailment or a consequence of his earlier prostate cancer diagnosis. However, neither the hospital nor the Pentagon have clarified this issue.
